The Art of the Perfect Fit: Tips & Tricks for Welding Permanent Anklets
Designing a permanent anklet requires a more nuanced touch than a bracelet. Because the ankle is constantly in motion—shifting shape as we walk, sit, or change footwear, the precision of the fit is everything.

The Golden Rule: Sizing is Everything
Unlike a wrist, which stays relatively uniform, an ankle expands and moves significantly. This is why sizing is the most critical step of the appointment.
Pro Tip: Always have an anklet sizer on hand. It allows the client to sample different "feels", from a snug, high-sitting look to a lower, draped style before you make the final cut.
The Paper Clip Chain Hack
If you’re looking for the perfect DIY sizer, look no further than Paper Clip chain.
Why it works: Because of the open links, you can clip a clasp or temporary jump ring at any point on the chain.
The Benefit: You don’t need to waste time attaching jump rings just to test a length. It’s the most efficient way to let a client "test drive" their new jewelry.
The "Walk-About" Test
Never weld an anklet while the client is just sitting on your stool. Once you’ve found a potential size:
1. Secure it temporarily.
2. Let the client walk around the room.
3. Have them flex their foot and go up on their toes.
The 4-Point Checklist
While your client is moving, observe the chain and ask these specific questions:
Does it ride up or down? If it slides under the heel or too far up the calf, the length needs adjusting.
Does it pinch? When they flex their foot, is the chain digging into the skin?
Does it lay flat? Ensure the chain style (especially flat links) isn't twisting awkwardly against the bone.
Is it a snag hazard? If it’s too loose, it’s only a matter of time before it catches on a sock, a boot, or a bedsheet.
The "Charm Check" Before the Spark
If your client is customizing their anklet with charms, your workflow is key. Never weld until the piece has been tried on with the charms attached.
Directional Check: Ensure all charms are facing outward and aren't flipping over or bunching up when the client moves.
The Lay-Flat Test: Some charms can "dig" into the ankle bone depending on where they sit. Confirm the charms are positioned in a way that remains comfortable against the skin during movement.
Once the size, style, and charm placement are confirmed, then you are ready to weld!
Don’t Forget the Clasp Option
While we love the "forever" aspect of permanent jewelry, anklets are the perfect gateway to introduce clasps.
Depending on your client’s lifestyle, whether they are active daily, or simply like to swap their look for different footwear, having a clasp option is a huge plus. It ensures they can still enjoy your high-quality wholesale chains without the commitment if their lifestyle demands flexibility.
